AUGUST 18 - 9TH ST, HB

Volcom Stones
Starfish Surf Series
9th St., Huntington Beach, CA

Stop number two of the Starfish Surf Series went down on August 18, 2007 at 9th St. Huntington Beach. We were blessed with fun consistent 2-4ft wind swell along with a huge turnout in the Groms division. As the summer comes closer and closer to an end you could tell the kids were frothing for some final summer excitement. And what better way to do it then by soaking up some rays, stuff your belly with food, surf your brains out and win some free stuff! Here is how it all went down:

The Girls were on fire all day whether it was surfing, hanging out or dodging the mischievous Groms. Local girl Sara Taylor and Melina Smith were the standouts of earlier rounds, but only one girl would stand victorious at the end. In the final Kaleigh Gilchrist showed some impressive skills, but it was all Sara Taylor who took home the win. She earned herself a Sector 9 skateboard, Vestal Watch and grip of other goods. Rounding out the final was Erika Cook, Melina Smith, Anissa Galindo, and Courtney Landingham.

The army of sixty Groms were on the beach in full force looking to get their hands on a first place Starfish trophy, a backpack stuffed with goodies, Santa Cruz Skate deck and the huge Air Force One remote controlled plane. John Elles and event number one winner, Colin Moran commanded the army until the final came around. The brother team of Jarad and Taylor Thorne took charge in the final and in the end the younger brother Taylor claimed the victory. Bobby Okvist, Colin Moran, Cole Devine, and John Elles rounded out the final.

Next it was the Juniors turn to make some commotion with some impressive surfing and boy was it fun to watch. Starfish regulars Victor Done, Bryan Doheny, and Dashel Pleza killed it in earlier rounds, but had problems finding the higher quality waves in the final. It was a two Junior race between Brent Reilly and David Shadowlike who traded blows to then end, but Brent was unstoppable. He took the victory along with some Future fins, Zoo York skate deck and bundle of other prizes. Oh yeah, not to mention Brent Reilly won $10,000 in last seasons 2007 VQS* Champ and he's now one step closer to qualifying for the 2008 VQS* Championship.

The Pro-Am money round was full of Huntington beach standouts such as Brad Ettinger, Gustavo Salazar, Ian Calderon, and Brandon Guilmette who all looked hungry for the $500.00 cash. Dave Post and Brazils Bruno Rodriguez took advantage of the ramped out sections in the shore break with some huge bashes. However, no one could catch up to Brandon Guilmettes opening waves as he led early on and was rewarded with the cash and smashing amount prizes at the end. Rounding out the final was Bruno Rodriguez, Gustavo Salazar, Dave Post, Brad Ettinger, and Ian Calderon.
