Our visits to Minneapolis always ends up being a good time. Mark Muller, Steve Gareri, M-Rod, Trog, Kyle and the rest of the good people at 3rd Lair Skatepark make life easy on us and pitched in for the WITP from A to Z. Their help was even more appreciated considering these guys ran two Minneapolis-area contests the day before! We got a chance to check out the second one and are impressed they had enough gas left to blow things up for the WITP on Sunday! Needless to say, the 3rd Lair crew know their way around the event scene and are backing the WITP mission in a big way. As for the park itself, 3rd Lair consists of multiple bowls, mini-ramps and street sections so there is definitely something for everyone.

After a quick meeting to go over the format, the 3rd annual Wild in the Parks at 3rd Lair got underway at high noon with the 14 & Under Division. This group of skaters has consistently been one of the highest skilled we’ve seen on the tour over the past few years. The 2008 installment of the WITP saw this trend continue! It was groovy to catch up with some familiar faces, and meet some fresh ones throughout the day. Jack Olson led the charge once again with David Munson, Alex Majeras and Andrew Leibman hot on his heels! The variety of tricks and the intensity with which these kids threw them down was insane! At the end of the day, Jack Olson claimed 1st (again), Alex Majeras 2nd and Andrew Leibman 3rd!
The 15 & Over Division was up next and considering the magic that we just witnessed, I think it’s fair to say these guys had their work cut out for them! My voice was already hoarse (Easily excitable) and it wasn’t going to get better anytime soon considering the frequency of which the bombs were being dropped! Many of last year’s14 & under competitors had graduated to the 15 + division and were commemorating this ascension by sporting less-then-impressive moustaches. Regardless, these guys skated like men and proceeded to put on a helluva show for all in attendance! Nice work chaps!!

Rounding out the day’s mayhem was the Pro-Am Division! These two heats were packed full of guys that weren’t looking to mess around! With representation from Fargo, Wisconsin, Iowa and beyond, many had traveled a long ways to claim some WITP fame and fortune, not to mention a birth in this year’s $30,000.00 WITP Championships (Peoria AZ, Sat Oct 18)! It was a show to remember as the action went neck and neck, trick for trick and slam for slam!! Ian Sherman, Mike Matzuka and Taylor Verva were in the house and pulling out all the stops to gain the upper hand and favor of the judges. After the scores were tallied though it was Luke Hampton taking top honors closely followed by Gregg Clover and Ian Sherman!
Thanks once again to Mark Muller, Steve Gareri, M-Rod (soon to be M-Daddy), Kyle, Trog and the rest of the 3rd Lair crew for all their hard work and WITP love. We’re stoked to be a part of the scene there and appreciate all those guys do. Thanks also to Tyler, Corey Schneider and Volcom’s own Andy Conrad for judging and everyone else who helped throughout the day. Thanks to Electric for throwing $50 into the pot for their “Hype of the Day” award as well as stoking out the winners with sunglasses!
