WITP BELGIUM
Another epic WITP in Zumiez.

Zumiez, the one and only indoor park in Belgium where the WITP is always guaranteed to have a lot of competitors and above all a high level of skateboarding. 123 Competitors, with nr:123 being no other then Kevin Vu. Who just spend a night in jail after fighting with some Belgium Techno Jonnies (at the Antwerp mini ramp session the night before). The fact that he showed up and made it on time, earned him the hype of the day… his skating was just a back up to proof that he deserved it.

The contest itself had sixty five entrees in the 14 & under category, fifty in the 15 & over and eight riders in the Pro/Am. With skaters from Finland, Poland, Estonia, Holland and of course Belgium the level and vibe was as good as it could be. Throw in some free candy, bbq, drinks and with the sun outside it was a perfect day!

As always we started with the kids, if you can still call them kids... since they now a days all skate like men! Alonso Grousaert, local Zumiez ripper took first place as expected, with tricks like fs feeble on the flatbar rail, too bad the final ended with a slam. Our first registry of the day, Thiebaut Maijers felt down with flip front board on the rail, breaking his arm in really nasty way. Thanks to the quick response from Maarten (Zumiez skatepark) the ambulance was there in no time. In the end Thiebaut still ended up taking 2nd, too bad he couldn’t be there to collect his prizes. So Thiebaut if you read this, we wish you well and hope you will recover quick. To solve the pain a bit we hooked him up with a Jart deck (and of course a friend took home his prizes). Third in the 14 & under category was Deeren van Heelle.

In 15 & over the level was incredible, fifty stoked skaters ripping it up in 3 heats.
Trevor Cappon doing some long wheelies kickflip out on the long ledge, other tricks that were standard in this heat, were kickflip frontboard, feeble grinds, Kickflip feeble grinds in the end Simon Deprez took home 1st, 2nd came Joren Loosveld and third Thomas van Hulle.

The Pro/Am division with skaters like, Nassim Guammaz, Axel Cruysbergh, Kevin Vu was on the level of any major big European skate contest. Big winner and surprise here was James Ghekiere after landing tricks like hardflip over the bump to bump and laser flip from the stairs. Axel ended up being 2nd with tricks like fs flip over the bump to flat & flip bs smith on the flatbar, Ronan ended up 3rd & Nassim 4th with the smallest difference in points ever (compared to Ronan).

Thanks to the Zumiez crew, Maarten, Elliot, Nico as judges, Sam the Man on the Mike and Laurent & David in the back as back up. Last but not least Jo & special thanks goes out to Arnoud our big help behind the scenes with all the Volcom events in Holland & Belgium.

PS: We didn’t film the event and are terrible sorry that you have to miss out on what we saw!!! “Insane skating”… So see you next year!!! Keep it Wild in the Park!!!
